BACK

I am from the 96 batch & am applying for IM residency this year. My scores r 88/97, CSA pass. I need some info on the residency positions in Minnesota, Iowa, Missouri, Illinois, Texas, Florida, Alabama, California (basically central & western US)regarding which r the good institutes, best bets, any special requirements (apart from the CA letter). Visa is not an issue. Currently, I am working as a research assistant in cardiology at LAC-USC (univ of southern calif), although I joined only a month ago. Also, can a'one give me info on radiology residency- how difficult is it for an IMG with no US exp & any progs offering a combined prelim-categorical position?
Thanks a lot!!!

You have good scores, and you are doing the right things (working as a research assistant etc), and don't have a visa issue. So you have the right mix for getting into a good program.

Before you apply to a program, call and find out what their requirements are so that you don't end up wasting money when you apply through ERAS (to programs whose eligibility criteria you don't meet).

With respect to which programs would be appropriate, here is a list of the programs I know of for internal medicine (there are IMG's who have done/are doing residencies in these programs). This is not all inclusive, and like I mentioned above, do call and find out as things keep on changing.

Minnesota:
Univ of Minnesota, Minneapolis
Hennepin County Medical Center, Minneapolis

Ohio:
Cleveland Clinc, Cleveland (at least till a year ago, they wanted scores of 90+ in both steps).
Fairview Hospital, Cleveland (is a small community hospital)
Metrohealth Medical Center, Cleveland
St Vincents Hospital, Cleveland (it is a small community hospital)
Akron General Hospital, Akron

New York:
SUNY Buffalo
SUNY Syracuse
SUNY Rochester
There are may in New York, but I dont know much about them.

Michigan:
Henry Ford, Detroit
Wayne State Univ, Detroit
William Beaumont, Detroit

Missouri:
St Louis Univ, St Louis
Univ of Kansas in Missouri, Kansas City, MO

Kansan:
Univ of Kansas, Kansas City, KS

Iowa:
Univ of Iowa, Iowa City

I don't know much about the other states.

With respect to radiology, it is not impossible to get into, but is getting difficult with more and more US med grads applying. Your best bet would be to try and see what happens (but again call programs first to find out what their requirements are).

To get a list of programs offering combined prelim-categorical positions, look up the AMA FREIDA website. Look under program details, most programs should have this information posted there.

Look up the links section in the GMCCOSA website, in the USMLE section, I have posted links to certain sites that have message boards like this. You can leave a message there and will hopefully get some useful input.

Another tip, look up the program websites. Some programs list the names and credentials of their residents. If there is a program which says that it takes IMG's, but you look up their website and 99/100 residents are graduates of US medical schools, then the chances of getting a residency there is somewhat lower than other places.

And when you are ready to write your personal statement and go around for interviews, I have some articles posted on the CAREER SERIES section of the website that you might find useful.

And lastly, I will ask other GMCites doing residencies here in the US to add programs to this list.

All the best!

(PS: I am currently doing my fellowship in Hem-Onc at the Univ of Minnesota, and did my residency from the Cleveland Clinic - just go give you a sense of confidence that I am not marofying fattas above)

Hi guys,
This is just a brief list of hospitals in Pennsylvania which would consider HI visa. If you have any other plans for fellowships etc, then you would need to plan things differently. Also its been almost 4 years for me now, so some of them might have opted out of HI (though I doubt it). So call them , if you can before spending your money. Unfortunately, university programs in PA do not offer HI visa (though that can be used to your advantage)

Lehigh valley hospital
Geisinger medical center
Conemaugh valley memorial hospital
UPMC - McKeesport
